Expert session ERTMS safety

Client: Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment
Sector: Rail & public transport » Safety

Increasing railway safety is an important reason for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment to implement ERTMS. The largest safety effect to be expected is a reduction of the number of SPADs (Signal Passed At Danger).

Different opinions existed in the rail sector as to the effects of ERTMS on the prevention of SPADs during departure of a train. The Ministry asked Intergo whether these opinions can be explained from a Human Factors point of view. Intergo was also asked to give a clear and concise answer about the effects of ERTMS on SPADs during departure, if possible.
During an expert session Intergo explored the explanations and arguments that were at the core of the opinions mentioned before. After a short inventory of the relevant ‘human factors’ at play it was possible to give an answer that fulfilled the needs of the Ministry. This was all done in a very short run-time.
The research question posed to Intergo by the Ministry was one of many studies the Ministry had carried out on the exploration of ERTMS.
