Ergonomics of a hospital bed

A short investigation was performed on problems in the use of a new hospital bed at Hospital Gelderse Vallei. The problems related to the adjustments of the headrest and the height of the bed.

The following data was collected:

  • the hand and feet force needed for the adjustments;
  • video-recordings of a nurse (team leader) to analyze posture and movement during the adjustments;
  • relevant measurements/distances during use;
  • experiences with the use of the bed (problems, frequencies of adjustments, possible solutions) via conversations with 4 persons (head, team leader and two nurses).

The results indicated that the standards were mainly violated while adjusting the beds of patients that cannot move. Practical advice has been given with respect to the design of the bed to improve the situation.
